What Are RAW Photo and Video Files?

If you’ve ever worked with a professional photographer or videographer, you might have heard the term “RAW files.” But what exactly are they, and why are they different from the final images or videos you receive? Let’s break it down so you understand what RAW files are and why they matter.

What Are RAW Files? RAW files are the unprocessed, uncompressed data captured directly from a camera’s sensor. Think of them like film negatives—these files contain all the details, colors, and information the camera sees, but they require editing and processing to bring out their full potential.

Key Features of RAW Files:

  • Uncompressed Data: Unlike JPEGs or MP4 videos, RAW files retain all the details from the sensor.

  • Large File Size: Because they contain so much data, RAW files take up more storage space.

  • Requires Special Software: To open and edit RAW images, you need programs like Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, or Capture One.

  • More Flexibility in Editing: Since RAW files retain all the original data, they allow for adjustments in exposure, white balance, and color grading without losing quality.

RAW vs. Edited Photos To illustrate the difference, I’ll include a side-by-side comparison of a RAW photo and the final, edited version. The RAW image may look dull, flat, and lacking contrast because it hasn't been processed yet. Once edited, the colors, contrast, and details are enhanced to bring the image to life.

RAW Video Files Just like photography, video can also be captured in RAW format. RAW video retains all color data and details, allowing for greater flexibility in post-production. However, these files are massive and require specialized editing software to be processed correctly.

so Can You Get RAW Files? Most photographers and videographers do not provide RAW files by default because they are unfinished works requiring professional processing. However, I do offer RAW and/or raw JPEG files for an additional price! It’s important to note that RAW JPEGs are not the same as RAW files — they are the unedited JPEGs straight from the camera but still compressed.

If you're interested in receiving RAW JPEGs from our shoot, feel free to reach out, and I’d be happy to discuss pricing and delivery options!

Why Photographers and Videographers Don’t Release RAW Files Many clients wonder why RAW files aren’t included in their packages. Here are some reasons:

  • They’re Unfinished: RAW files are like ingredients, not a finished dish. Without proper editing, they don’t represent the final vision.

  • File Size & Compatibility: RAW files are large and may require specialized software that most clients don’t have.

  • Brand Representation: Photographers and videographers take pride in their editing style, which plays a big role in delivering a polished final product.

By understanding what RAW files are and why they matter, you can better appreciate the process behind professional photography and videography. If you have any questions or are interested in booking a session, let’s chat!
