NBN #001 | breaking "bad" patterns for healthier habits
read time: 3 minutes
1 LIFE LESSON LEARNED
i used to beat myself up for having “bad” patterns like overthinking, feeling all over the place, scrolling on social media, my anxious-avoidant attachment styles, etc.
the list could go on and on!
the reason why i put “bad” in quotes is because growing up, i was taught to judge something as bad or good instead of observing it for what it is.
the more that i judged a pattern as bad, it continued the spiral of judgment towards myself.
(and the spiral was not a place that i wanted to keep playing out in my life.)
to stop this cycle of judgment, i began to observe my patterns for what they simply are — a pattern.
one way that i practice observation is to tell myself “hm, i notice that i’m repeating this pattern of *insert pattern here*”
through observation of “bad” patterns, it allowed me to stay at a neutral point so that i can consciously choose whether or not i want to repeat it in that present moment.
sometimes i still repeat patterns that i mentioned at the beginning. the more i practiced with showing up for myself through that neutral point, repeating the patterns became less and less.
and when these patterns are repeated less, it makes room to create healthier patterns & habits moving forward.
when we practice observing our patterns instead of labeling them as “good” or “bad,” it allows us to stay neutral so we can consciously choose whether or not to repeat them 💫
1 BOOK QUOTE FROM A MENTOR
"one of the most effective things you can do to build better habits is to join a culture where your desired behavior is the normal behavior.”
— james clear, author of atomic habits
i’ve been re-reading this book over the past week & it’s been helping me sooo much with creating healthier habits in my personal life & for my biz (like how i finally started writing this newsletter for you!)
this quote is a great reminder to reflect on whether or not the people you surround yourself with now is emulating the desired behavior that you want to implement into your life.
ex. because i’m shifting into my pattern & habit as a writer, i’ve been surrounding myself with authors who inspire me to grow as a writer.
when we’re actively part of a certain culture or community, we help each other grow exponentially.
